What Causes Discomfort In The Gums While Suffering From Acid Reflux?

I am a female, 52 years old. I have had acid reflux for several years. For the last couple of months, I have been experiencing intermittent discomfort in my gums (both sides toward front of mouth), and also at the base of my tongue at times. It seems like this oral discomfort may be more intense when the reflux is worse. Could these symptoms be related? Also, I take 20 mg Omeprazole once a day at bedtime, but this no longer seems to help that much. Thank you for any answers you might be able to provide.
