What Causes Discomfort In The Jaws While Eating?

I got in a fight about a year ago and got punched in the jaw pretty hard, wasn t able to eat hard foods for a while but never went to the doctor to get it checked out. Now the past few months, I ve felt clinking noises when I eat hard or tough foods. Could these two things be relevant to each other

Hi..
Thanks for the query..

Yes, both the things are related and the clicking sound from the jaw joints are due to trauma to the jaw joint due to punching and leading to Jaw Joint Dysfunction or TMJ/TMD.

So my suggestion is to consult an Oral Physician and get evaluated and a thorough clinical examination and investigation like Panoromic x ray can help in diagnosis and treatment can be done accordingly..

As of now you should take a soft diet, avoid excessive mouth opening and massage the side of the face with round gentle movement of finger tips..
Take muscle relaxant if there is tightness in jaw..
The Physician can advise you Physiotherapy and mouth guards..

Hope this helps..

Regards..
