What Causes Discomfort In The Left Testicle After Smoking Marijuana?

Hello. My name is Jay, I m 18, and I ve been casually smoking marijuana for the past two months*. I can t say I am a heavy marijuana smoker, but since April, I ve been smoking marijuana more often than usual. This morning, of July 2, 2017, I woke up and masturbated. When doing so, I felt my left testicle and it was more firm than usual, but not hard, nor was there any discomfort or pain. There was also no form of sweeping either. There wasn t any other issues I ve experienced either, besides the firm feeling. Overtime, the firm feeling wasn t present as before, but my left testicle felt SLIGHTLY different from my right, but nothing major to my knowledge. I did some background research and was reading about how other males have varicocele at various ages, but some have said they experienced pain or discomfort in their testes when consuming marijuana, and when they went to go get checked, they have said they have a varicocele. I m not sure if it developed overtime, or if it was from smoking marijuana I ve never had any form/types of issues in the past smoking weed or with my testicles before. Do I have varicocele, or am I overreacting? How do I know I have varicocele? Does marijuana cause varicocele? Or is varicocele common in men around my age? Should I quit smoking permanently or temporarily? Is there any natural treatment before going to see a doctor (due to driving distance)? I also read that it s pretty common for young adults to face this issue. I have not masturbated, nor smoked at all since this morning, because I fear something might happen. I am in no pain or discomfort, there is no swelling and the firmness seems to be gone as of now, but I am kind of paranoid something might happen in the long run. Thank you for understand my situation.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

This type of pain and location is suggestive of epididymitis which is inflammation of part of testicle and this not uncommon in males especially in young age.

This is usually treated with 10 days of antibiotics, usually ciprofloxacin and there are no permanent consequances.

Masturbation and intercourse should be avoided till pain persist, if possible, since it may prolong inflammation course. Some more serious conditions such as tumors or torsion are rare but in doubtful cases, you should do Doppler ultrasound or scintigraphy.

In this particular case, I don’t think this is required and this should improve on antibiotic therapy.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ivan R. Rommstein
