What Causes Discomfort In The Throat And Chest?

Hello. I have been having this sensation of air stuck in my throat and chest. It started roughly 3 weeks ago. I ended up with what I think was Viral Gastroenteritis and since then the symptoms slowly started and now are quite bothersome. I feel like I have an air bubble ( for lack of any other way to describe it) stuck in my throat and chest. It s like swallowing too much air , but this has gone on now for the last few weeks. I ve also developed a dry cough in the last 5 days, that seems to be increasing daily, along with my symptoms. Is it possible from throwing up so violently from the virus, that my Esophageal sphincter is stuck open and hence I have air coming up from my stomach or when I swallow that is trapped and causing these symptoms? My chest feels tight and I can t seem to get a deep enough breathe or enough air in when I inhale.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

In my opinion, your symptoms, the feeling that you might have swallowed too much air, cough, and breathing trouble, might be caused by gastroesophageal reflux.

This is a very common disorder, that causes laryngitis, accompanied by a dry cough. I suggest you take Omeprazole twice daily (in the morning 30 minutes before breakfast and before sleeping at night) for one week.

Also, I suggest you to avoid eating fried, fast food and snack food. If you note any improvement during this treatment, I suggest you continue it for one month, once in the morning.

If you don't improve or your cough gets worse, I suggest you consult a pneumologist for a physical examination.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Suela Gjata, General & Family Physician
