What Causes Disorientation In An Elderly Person?

My 97-year-old Dad (in very good health and still active has said he doesn t feel well today. He just told me there were tiny ants crawling all over the counter and in the cereal he eats at night. When I went to look, there were no ants. he even looked with a magnifying glass. This has not happened before. His vision has always been excellent, and he doesn t even wear glasses, but reads for many hours each day.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

Transient episode of visual disturbances in terms of crawling ants can be due to over exertion of vision through excess reading, but the same persists over a period of time repeatedly, then issue with vision has to be evaluated by consultant ophthalmologist. The disorientation can be related to age related cerebral atrophy changes and the same should be evaluated with MRI brain.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
