What Causes Distortion Of Speech And Problem In Swallowing?

my mother is 74 years old and a few months ago we thought she was suffering with a cold. A few weeks later we noticed she was unable to speak clearly...her speech is very distorted and she has problem swallowing and has lost a lot of weight...what could have caused this?
