Welcome to HCM,
I am happy to discuss your situation with you. According to the
Diabetes Guidelines in the United Stated, a fasting blood sugar greater than 125 mg/dl is considered a diabetic state. Also, if you are checking your own blood sugar that is not the best way to diagnose. Checking blood sugar at the lab and verifying a second time by the same type of test is the proper way to make a diagnosis. If you do have diabetes controlling your sugar will help your heart in the long run.
Being light-headed may be relieved by a couple of things. Try eating small meals containing a source of low fat protein and high fiber
carbohydrate several times a day to keep a consistent input of blood sugar. No large meals, break up the amounts into 6 feeding per day.
Start changing your grains to oat based as opposed to wheat. Eat fresh fruit as opposed to juice as a general rule. Chew food well. Get up slowly from a sitting or lying position.
The blood pressure needs to be one number over another or I don't understand it. You have the systolic number - the one on top and the diastolic or the number on the bottom such as 140/90.
Why does your wife want you to go to the emergency room? Are you short of breath or falling? Are you passing our or having chest pains? These are the things you would go to the ER for.
When you see your doctor you may ask him point blank if you have diabetes and what is the treatment for it. Diet is the starting point. Exercise is important. Avoiding sucrose and added sugars is important as is getting your nutritional needs met.
If your doctor verifies you have diabetes I would advise working with a dietitian to get a meal plan with recipes for your wife set up. An exercise program for you will be discussed - a reasonable maintainable one.
Thank you for seeking additional information so you can make an informed decision. Regards, Kathy J. Shattler, MS,RDN
