What Causes Dizziness Upon Sitting?

My husband is having dizzness upon standing after being seated or reclining. He seemed to black out last night,he had no memory of falling. Could this be because his blood pressure is dropping, due to weight loss in the last month. He has a variety of issues, type 2 diabetes, high cholestrol, GERD, just a bunch of stuff. He is 67. Suggestions?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

There are several possible causes for the dizziness your husband is having.
One is orthostatic hypotension which is blood pressure going down significantly with standing. During this time the blood flow in the brain decreases as well and might cause the patient to fall. A visit with the doctor measuring the blood pressure lying and standing and checking if there is a significant difference makes this diagnosis.

On the other hand having diabetes might affect his autonomous response which take care of vessel changes to keep a normal pressure in them and their dysfunction due to diabetes may cause your husband to have symptoms when he stands.
Patients with diabetes also have high risk of heart problems so he will need a good auscultation of the heart and possibly and ECG.

I hope I have answered to your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Kind regards,
