What Causes Dizziness When I Bend Head Downwards?

When i bend my head down to the ground i feel like im going to pass out. The room spins and it feels like an earthquake. Last night i had an episode while in bed where the room was spinning. I have had my blood sugar and pressure checked and they are all within normal limits. Any advice would be appreciated. I am a 48 year old female with slightly high cholesterol. All day i have been unable to bend my head down to the ground ( ie in a prostration position) due to this heavy imbalance and feeling of passing out. I hope i have provided helpful information to you. Thanks

Hi,

The symptoms you are describing, such as dizziness and room spinning, when you bend your head down are likely due to a condition called Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV). BPPV is a common condition that affects the inner ear and can cause brief episodes of vertigo or dizziness that occur when you change the position of your head, such as when bending down or getting up from bed.

The inner ear has tiny crystals called otoliths that help detect movement and orientation. When these crystals become dislodged and move into the wrong part of the inner ear, it can cause BPPV. Other possible causes of your symptoms could include an inner ear infection or Meniere's disease.

I would recommend seeing an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) specialist or a neurologist for further evaluation and diagnosis. They may perform some simple tests, such as the Dix-Hallpike maneuver, to determine if you have BPPV. Treatment for BPPV may include exercises called the Epley or Semont maneuvers, which can help reposition the dislodged crystals back to their proper location in the inner ear.

In the meantime, you should avoid any sudden head movements or positions that trigger your symptoms. If your symptoms become severe, you should seek medical attention immediately.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
