What Causes Dizziness While On Blood Pressure Medication?

My mother in law who is 88 has had a bout of dizzy spells over the last 3 weeks. She had a quad by pass about 10 years ago. She does take BP medicine and also meds for high cholesterol. Otherwise in good shape and works out at her retirement center s fitness center. She has a physician who saw her recently and attributed the dizzy symptoms to a long road trip (8 hour each way w/in a 5 day period) and that she just needed to rest and recover. This past Saturday she fell due to a dizzy spell and got bruised up and her back is also sore. If not feeling better Monday, she says she will go to the Dr. on Monday. Should we be worried?

Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Dizziness is usually due to decrease in the blood flow to certain parts of the brain. Since she has high blood pressure, high cholesterol and has had a by pass, she has atherosclerosis which leads to narrowing of blood vessels. She may also require to be investigated with a CT/ MRI scan.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Noble Zachariah
