What Causes Dizziness, nausea And Fainting With Cold Weather?

Hi, may I answer your health queries right now ? Please type your query here...I have had frost bite to the hands in the past, so now it does not take much for the cold to affect my hands. I would like to know the metabolic reason why when my hands get very cold now, I get dizzy , get nausea /diarrhea and will faint if I do not lay down. Is it a prostaglandin dump?

Hi,

Frost bite to the hands in past indicates hyper reaction to cold due to overactive sympathetic-parasympathetic system. This can occur anywhere in body. The reasons can be any granulomatous disease can cause such changes which were not there in past. Autoimmune diseases affecting the small blood vessels. Smoking or tobacco in any form. Some medicines like used for migraine in past. Hypotensive states. Dehydration.

These may be the reasons for getting dizziness and other symptoms as you have mentioned. I would advise you in such a case to consult your doctor for proper and detailed clinical evaluation. Investigations related to clinical findings. CBC, thyroid and liver functions, Autoimmune disease panel and so on. Color Doppler of all the limbs particularly for arterial diseases. All these will lead to a proper diagnosis and management. Keep yourself well hydrated all the time. Avoid exposure to extreme cold.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
