Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have an episode every 2 or 3 months where I have a dizzy spell accompanied by tingling in arms and I feel like I m going to pass out. Only lasts to 7 seconds. Last night however I lost consiousness 3 times for about 30 seconds, felt naseuos and got hot and sweaty. My boyfriend had to hold on to me as I was deadweight. What could this be?
Hi. There are several reasons that one may pass out or lose consciousness.
The common reasons involve the heart and the blood supply. When one stands up suddenly or when there is a sudden stimulation of the vagus system, blood would move away from the arms and head and move to the legs.
This causes pooling of the blood in the legs and may present with tingling and numbness. One would start to feel dizzy as the blood supply to the brain reduces. After this, one may faint or lose consciousness.
To confirm this, one would need a turn table test to confirm if changes in the body position would cause one to faint. Once confirmed, the doctor may suggest medication or suggest that you get up slowly to prevent episodes of fainting. Avoiding prolonged standing may also be useful.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards, Dr. Vignan Rachabattuni
