What Causes Double Vision After Itching The Ears?

My dad, who is a very active 79 yr old, experienced an episode he had never experienced while driving. He had an itch in his ear, and when he stuck his finger inside to scratch and removed it, he immediately saw several roads in front of him instead of the 2 lanes. He also felt as though his truck was sliding sideways down the road instead of traveling straight ahead. It lasted about 10 seconds, and it is a miracle he did not have an accident. He said he just prayed for God to help him and He did. What could this be?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

Double vision is also called diplopia can be due to ocular muscle paralysisphoria. Squint can be anisometropia due to amblyopia of one eye. Refraction should be done if error found then it should be corrected. An eye doctor should examine every aspect of the eye.
It cannot be due to a tooth problem. If required it can be extracted or root canal treatment can be done and this will not affect vision. It is only a misnomer they are a separate entity.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
