What Causes Dried Yellowish Phlegm With Blood When Coughing?

I have had a cough that started approx. 3-4 days ago and this morning i woke up with dried yellowish phlegm and blood on my hand. I have coughed up 2 times today yellow mucus with blood in it. My throat isn t scratchy. It feel a little sore and my voice is a little hoarse and sometimes when i talk my throat feels tight and sore it is like straining to talk. Could the blood be a sign of something serious or just maybe is my throat raw?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The symptoms seem to be related to a respiratory tract infection. I suggest using an anti inflammatory medication such as Acetaminophen to relieve the symptoms. I also suggest to use a mucolytic for the mucus such as Mucinex. I recommend to drink liquids and rest. The blood in the sputum is probably related to the rupture of microvessels due to the cough. If the symptoms continue I suggest to take oral antibiotics.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
