Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Drowsiness While On Lamotrigine And Lamictal?
I was diagnosed with Borderline PD and MDD, and my GP and Psychologist got me started on Lamotrigine. (I ve been taking Brintellix/Trintellix for the past month). My GP prescribed Lamictal, but my pharmacist gave me the generic, Epitec. It s been 12 days now (I take it at night), and have found that it makes me exceptionally drowsy. I m a little paranoid when it comes to medication, and was just wondering whether this effect is normal? I m currently only on 25mg, going onto 50mg in a couple of days. I m worried that with the increase, it will make the drowsiness even worse. I m also wondering whether I should have stayed with the original prescription for Lamictal instead of the Epitec... Does it make much of a difference?
Lamictal is having lamotrigine. It is a standard company's brand drug. Epitec is generic one. And in my clinical experience, generic medicines can show more side effects.
So in my opinion, you should take Lamictal only, not Epitec and see if this is improving your drowsiness.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
