What Causes Dry And Brittle Hair After Hospitalization For Viral Infection?

Dr. Rynne, Back in June 2016, I was hospitalized for 1 week with an undetermined serious virus that really attacked my immune system. I had constant fever, very weak , I was given Levoflacin , 1- 750 mg for 14 days & Zovirax, 800 mg 2 x a day for a severe ulcerated throat for 14 days. At the time, I was released from the hospital my bangs especially were dry, brittle, & crinkled. To this day, all my hair continues to be dry, brittle, & losing hair. What can be causing this & what treatment should be taken to get my hair looking healthy again & stop hair loss ?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Hair loss and other changes can occur as a result of serious medical illness, it is called telogen effluvium.

Normally it lasts only a few weeks or months after the acute illness. The fact that hair loss is continuing implies that there may be another cause. It would be best to see a dermatologist for assessment.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James, General & Family Physician
