What Causes Dry And Cracked Lips Post Dental Treatment?

Hey there! I recently got what is called resin bonding treatment, to cover gaps in my two front teeth. Ever since i got those perfect teeth, my lips have suffered. I have super dry, cracked lips. I think it may be because saliva used to pass through that big gap into my lips and lubricate them, but since the gap is gone that is no longer possible, and instead i have a dry mouth and a lot of saliva buildup that i constantly have to swallow. No, i can't take the resin off. My dad won't let me, the procedure costed him a lot of money and there isn't a re-fund option. I gotta live like this, at least for a while. Solutions?? Drinking water doesn't help and lip balm didn't help either. Will they heal on their own??

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of dry and cracked lips post dental treatment which is angular cheilitis and chapped lips which occurs due to loss of natural moisture of lips. There must be drooling of saliva during dental treatment and composite material at times reaches these surfaces and give symptoms.

I would suggest you to apply lip balm throughout the day to retain moisture. You should apply vitamin E oil at night and eat green leafy vegetables and fresh fruits. If condition persists for more than a week or get worse consult dermatologist for proper diagnosis so that doctor can rule out any infection. Doctor may prescribe oral/topical antibiotics and steroids.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

As per your complain the symptoms of Dry and cracked lips along with a dry mouth can be due to non compatibility or allergic reaction to the resin filling that you have got done..
Although allergies due to Dental materials is rare..
But in case if the symptoms persist and does not improve getting the filling replaced by other materials is the only option..
As of now you should apply thick coat of Petroleum jelly or beeswax containing lip balm over the lips..
Do cool compresses..
Avoid licking or sucking the lips..
You should avoid excessive exposure to sun or Dry air..
For Dry mouth chew sugar free chewing gum and instil artificial saliva drops..
Suck tart candies..
Drink plenty of water..

In case of no improvement consult your Oral Physician and get evaluated..

Hope this helps..

Regards.
