What Causes Dry, Flaky And Itchy Skin On The Mouth, Eyelids And Lips?

What could be the cause of recurring severe dry flaky, itchy skin around the mouth, eyelids and lips? A dermatologist has diagnosed contact dermatitis and prescribed a steroid cream which has not helped. There are no triggers and the person eats an extremely healthy diet and is not over-exposed to sun, nor has no known allergies. It comes and goes regularly.

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of dry, flaky and itchy skin on the mouth, eyelids and lips which seems to be due to allergic reaction which can cause allergic dermatitis/ contact dermatitis.

Need not to worry. I would suggest you to

- Apply cold compresses over itchy skin.

- Maintain proper cleanliness and avoid scratching the bumps to prevent infection.

- start taking anti allergics medications such as Allegra.

- Application of calamine lotion will be effective to soothe the skin.

If symptoms still keeps on persisting you should visit dermatologist once and get it examined. Go for patch test and blood tests and start treatment after proper prescription. You should apply a steroid ointment like cortisone over the rash area for relieving inflammation and itching.
