What Causes Dry Mouth After A Dental Procedure?

i had two teeth pulled out in December and a temporary partial denture ( several other teeth are missing. Since then discomfort has got progressively worse and last month or so I now have burning mouth syndrome. Sometimes I seem to over salivate when the dentures are in at other times my mouth can become extremely dry. My lips are often sticky. Applying lip balm does not seem to help all that much - despite reapplying very frequently. Could this be a reaction to the acrylic material used in the denture or the dye? I have never in my life had dry lips or dms and can only assume it is because of the denture as that is the only new occurance. I wonder if there is a mild allergic reaction because I cannot wear acrylic at all - it makes me instantly very hot - is this related?

Greetings from Healthcare magic members,

I can understand your reason of worry.
Burning mouth syndrome is characterized by hot or burning sensation which can affect tongue, lips, palate or other areas within the mouth but without any significant clinical mucosal changes. There can be several possible causes and sometimes it is idiopathic (without any specific reasons). Few causes include:

1. Hormone changes
2. Stress or anxiery
3. Nerve damage
4. Certain vitamins, iron or folic acid deficiency
5. Allergy to certain toothpaste, drug or food item
6. Fungal infection
7. Ill fitting dentures or being allergic to the materials used in denture primarily acrylic

Treatment of this problem is primarily related in eradicating the cause. Therefore, i would recommend you to visit your dentist and get a new
fitted denture made of material other than acrylic. In addition, the following instructions will help ease your symptoms:
1. Keep sipping water frequently
2.Chew sugar free gum to increase the salivary flow
3. Avoid hot and spicy foods, alcohol or acidic fruits and juices
4. Do not stick to one brand of toothpaste and mouthwash

Hope this answer is helpful. If you have any further questions, do not hesitate to ask me.
Best regards,
Dr. Khoja
