What Causes Dry Mouth After Taking Levaquin?

Ever since I took Levaquin in December for about eight days, my mouth has been extremely dry, my saliva is white foamy and my taste buds are very sensitive. It somewhat subsided after a couple of months. Then I recently got sick again, was given a different type of strong antibiotic and the foaming, the excessively dry mouth, damage taste buds have all return back. I am a 10 year stage ll thyroid cancer survivor. What could be causing all of this?

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concern.

As per your complain Levaquin which has active ingredient Levofloxacin is a Fluoroquinolones group of antibiotic and dry mouth is a common side effect of levofloxacin.
The sensitive taste buds occurs due to inflammation in mouth secondary to dry mouth..
As you have similar symptoms with the another antibiotic that you are taking can also be due to side effect of the antibiotic..
Nothing to worry as when the intake of the antibiotic will be withdrawn gradually the symptoms will subside..
As of now to relieve dry mouth you can chew sugar-free chewing gums as it helps in stimulating saliva flow.
Gargle with a numbing mouthwash containing Lignocaine for relieving sensitivity of tongue especially during meals..
Drink plenty of cool water and suck on ice pops for relieving inflammation of tongue..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
