What Causes Dry Mouth?

I have very little saliva. This has been going on for about a month. I have to drink a lot more water or chew gum to get more saliva. This has affected by speech. I went to the dentist the other day and he said that I sounded like I had a cough drop in my mouth.

Hi..
Thanks for the query..

Yes, the symptoms are clearly indicative of dry mouth which in medical terms is known as Xerostomia..
As the symptoms are appearing to be severe you need to first of all get checked for any disturbed function of the salivary glands or autoimmune disease like Sjogrens syndrome..
When the symptoms are so severe then only chewing gums will not help..
You should start using saliva substitutes like artificial saliva drops or lubricant gels like Oralgel..
Along wit it drink sufficient water to avoid dehydration that is also a common cause for dry mouth..
Avoid any mal-habits that can cause dry mouth like smoking or alcohol intake.

Hope this helps..

Regards.
