What Causes Dryness Inside Throat?

Hi, all of a sudden my throat felt dry so I went to gargle with water and it was still the same then I drank lots of water and I can swallow fine but my throat just feels dry for some reason, it feels like I have something stuck but I ve even put my finger down my throat and nothing is there as I can breath and swallow properly, it s like there s a scar maybe or a spot I don t know exactly and I don t know what to do as I m on holiday and don t have doctor here. Would be much appreciated if you could help me out and tell me if its anything serious or something to panic about?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Your history is suggestive of wither of the following problems:
- Xerostomia is a condition in which there is less activity of minor salivary glands in particular.
- Sjogren's syndrome.
-Globus hystericus in which one feels like there is something stuck in throat which may not actually be a condition.
- Presence of a real lump or swelling in lower throat.

I would advise you the following as you do not have any Doctor nearby as per your history:
- Take sips of honey and let it linger in mouth and throat.
- Try lemon drops, sugar if you do not have diabetes.
- Take an anti-inflammatory whichever suits you.
- if these measures do not help then surely you have consult a Doctor, preferably an ENT Surgeon and undergo endoscopy, investigations to get a proper diagnosis and thus have proper management.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
