What Causes Dryness Of Vulva Area Post IUD Insertion?

Hi, I m a 24 year old, healthy adult. I was diagnosed with endometriosis when I was 17. Symptoms were fairly managed with birth control, but I had to change my prescription every few months because they would lose their effectiveness for my severe cramps. I began using NuvaRing continuously (changing it every 3 weeks without a break week) and it was effective for several months, but then I switched to the Mirena IUD last May. In September it fell out on its own. The next day I inserted a new NuvaRing and have been using it continuously as before. This is working for my endometriosis, but not for my sex life. Since inserting the IUD I became drier, and its continuing to worsen even without the IUD for 8 months. Also, my vulva is very sensitive to everything. Soaps, vaginal cleansing wipes, even balanced pH vaginal wash causes irritation. I m only able to use coconut oil as lube, and even still, I get friction irritation and have to rest for a few days following. (Not to be crass, before all of this I was sleeping with my husband 3-5 times per day without irritation.) I am with the same man, using the same soaps, and detergents. The only difference is the hormones. I am wondering -- what would cause all of this? Its continuing to worsen. Should I go off all hormones for a period of time to let my body adjust and reboot? Any suggestions?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

The cause for your vaginal irritation and dryness would be NuvaRing as some women have this as a side effect. I would recommend you to change your method of contraception and use something else. You don't need to be off contraception but need to change it.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Anoop Kumar, General & Family Physician
