Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hello, For the past 2 years I have been unable to put my head underwater while swimming. If I do this, my right ear gets instantly clogged and cannot hear in that ear and nothing will remove the water unless I take a cotton bud (cutip) and put it deep in my ear to absorb the water. That is the only way that I can unclog it, it will not drain on its own, and will not drain from jumping up and down or tilting my head, or any of the other recommended methods. I want to know whats causing this problem which only developed 2 years ago, and how I can fix it so that I can enjoy swimming again.
Prolonged period of ear clogging following swimming can occur due to the presence of ear wax. Please be advised to follow up with your primary provider to see if there is excessive wax build up and ear wax removal if needed. You can also apply hydrogen peroxide ear drops immediately after swimming. This will help the water to evaporate from ear faster and prevent infection like swimmer's ear.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Lekshmi Rita Venugopal, General & Family Physician
