What Causes Ear Pain?

Hi, I am having pain in my ear (mostly left ear) when i talk over the phone (both cell and landline). It would pain only when i used my mobile but now it happens with wired phone as well. The pain is basically behind the ear and extends above the ear.I cannot talk over phone for long time as it pains and is very unconmfortable. I do not use any ear phones.I have reduced using my phones now.I am really worried. Is this something serious ? Can this lead to hearing loss?
