What Causes Early Menstruation Along With Abdominal Cramping And Tender Breasts?

I am a 21 year old female who just three weeks ago was in the hospital, deathly ill from septic shock. Luckily I survived, but while I was there I had a strangely light and early period (I usually have really heavy periods) and now I m having PMS-like symptoms (tender breasts and cramping), but no period. What is happening? I m sexually active, but I have a copper IUD.a,j,

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi, thanks for using healthcare magic

Physical illness can alter the menstrual cycle. Since you were very ill, this is likely the reason for the abnormal bleeding during your hospital stay and also the symptoms that you are experiencing now (breast tenderness, cramping).

Your cycle and associated symptoms should normalize within 2 to 3 cycles.

I hope this helps
