What Causes Edema In Genitals And Legs?

My husband Harold (80 yrs) has had edema in feet and legs. Yesterday it also appeared in testicles and penis. Doctor prescribed diuretic - he took 2 yesterday and 1 today. I can t get him up from chair to check condition or change pants. With dementia he can be stubborn, but I fear it s more weakness and possibly pain that he can t identify - just says he can t get up. Visiting nurse on phone agrees I should call ambulance - can you recommend any other medication or solution?

Hello,

As his age is 80 and dementia it is but obvious to a conclusion I feel that the venous return is reduced and due to which he has swelling of the lower limbs. The first thing to do is, when he is lying in bed keep the legs over the pillow. Next use the diuretic prescribed by the physician.

If possible then get the urine and blood routine get tested to check if any infection is bothering. Coming to the part of scrotum getting swollen it needs an examination. It may happen if there is any urinary retention or infection. A physical examination will be of benefit.

As he is 80, he needs a passive physical therapy and later on actions to improve the overall physical activity levels by which he can get active.

There was a recent research article in 2019, which states that exercise helps reduce dementia and also improve the overall abilities to conduct the ADL.

I will recommend getting the scrotum physically examined by the physician, next blood and urine test, next diuretic and stockings. and most important need is of physical therapy.

In my 12 years of experience, I have noticed that even at the age of 90+ most patients are benefitted with physical therapy and improved their ADL (activities of daily living).

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
