What Causes Elastic Sound In Ear?

I have a sound in my ear that sounds like a rubber band being stretched and then touched (like you would with a guitar but this is an elastic sound). It started about three months ago. I have no pain or itch or any thing other, just annoying sound.FYI I fly a lot.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Having such a sound as you have explained is called a tinnitus. It is like elastic sound means the part of the cochlea that is inflamed has movement of the hair cells for that particular frequency. If not, you can have a problem with the nerve as we find like an arterial loop around the nerve and also has hypertension. I would advise you to consult an ENT surgeon for complete ENT endoscopy, audiometry, MRI of mastoids, the nerve and to find out whether there is an arterial loop around the nerve, watch for hypertension.

Also, see whether you had been given or taken any medicines which can be ototoxic. All these will give an appropriate diagnosis so that a specific treatment can be started and additional symptomatic and supportive treatment given. Also, reduce your stress and anxiety. See that you are away from any loud sounds to avoid further damage.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
