What Causes Electrical Shock Feeling In The Head?

I m a 64 yr old female with symptoms on my right side of my head that i cannot identify. Seems to be happening daily, several times. Seems to be near the right ear area. I hear a quiet quick sound like a surge of electricity sensation. Do you have any suggestions as to how I should proceed?

Hi there,

Your symptoms seem to be rather non-specific and as you rightly said, quite difficult to identify. Right now I am leaning more towards an ear problem, or possibility something nerve-related. What would help narrow it down further is the consideration of other details such as:

1. Is there actually a headache or any feeling of discomfort at all? Do you have the sensation in the face or just the scalp? Do you have tendency to migraines? Do you have any other medical illness like diabetes? These make it more likely to be neurological.

2. Is there any sensation within the ear itself? Any giddiness, any ringing in the ears, any other hearing problems?

If it has just started for a day or two, you can actually wait it out to see if it resolves on its own, since it is highly unlikely that it is something dangerous. If it doesn't improve after a week or two, or you have any doubts at all, I would suggest visiting just a general physician to have a look inside the ears first, before possibly proceeding to a neurologist for a more detailed examination.

Hope this helps, and all the best to you.

Regards,
Dr. Teh
