Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi, I had a blood test today. My AST is 87 and my ALT is 130. I had approximately 6-8 beer less than 24 hours earlier. I have a doctors appointment on Tuesday but I have also read online that the elevated levels could be signs of hepititas c. I m really looking for peace of mind here. Can you please tell me what you think?
Hi. When the liver is under stress due to any cause there is a rise in the liver enzymes (alt and ast). Alcohol, infections from hepatitis or any other cause and various drugs, fatty liver can cause this. The beer could have increased the enzymes in your case. You should retest it after 2 wks. Like you said hepatitis c can cause a rise too and its a rather quiet disease initially. So if your enzymes dont settle in 2 wks please visit a gastro medicine specialist and get yourself evaluated. Hope this helps. take care.
