What Causes Elevated AST In Blood While On Coenzyme Q-10?

AST level up to 47 from 36 a year ago. Exercise 5-6 days a week, crossfit. Eat a good diet and drink alcohol regularly though in moderation. Was taking CO q 10 supplements 400mg for a month before the blood test. Could exercise or supplement be the reason for the elevated AST? All other levels were normal

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Thank you for your question and welcome to HCM. I understand your concern.

With such presentations in my clinic, I would try to explain that 47 U/L is not a concerning value. Regarding the uptake of Coenzime Q-10, elevated liver enzymes have been reported with CoQ-10, but only rarely. Excessive exercise may also be the culprit of elevated AST level.
Beside that, I would like to emphasise that the role of alcohol uptake is much more important in increasing normal range of Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST) levels than CoQ-10 and exercise.

I hope I was helpful. Take care and feel free to ask again. Good day.
