Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Elevated COI Values With Non-reactive HIV Test Result?
Non-Reactive (0.349 COI) The sample was non-reactive for HIV (HIV antigen or antibody was not detected). The test is highly accurate after 4 weeks and almost 100% after 8 weeks, so may not detect recent exposure. A re-test is recommended in 12 months or on change of partner. Please can you explain this and why is the 0.349 so high if I m negative.
It is neither that high nor that specific for HIV (the tests mentioned would not have been reacting iwth the HIV specifically). The ELISA test is whether the serum sticks to the plate (which has HIV stuck on it). BUT, it is a plate. Serum is stickier with any immune or inflammatory condition. This includes colds, infections, hepatitis, TB, malaria, trauma, dental conditions, etc. There is not a lot of good reason to have all the retesting except the people who put out the test want to CYA.
