What Causes Elevated PSA Levels While Suffering From Prostatitis?

I would like to know if I have prostate cancer. I have taken an immunology test. Came out positive for anti streptolysin. I have had an MRI which showed some enlargement of the prostate gland and said possible explanation is prostatitis. My psa levels after doing 6 rials were as following; 17,13,14,16,56,25,19. The day it was 56 I had extreme fever and pain all over. The Doctor wants to perform an biopsy but I want to know if the psa levels are high due to the prostatitis and or infection or is it cancer. Thanks.

Hi,

Prostate cancer can't be diagnosed by MRI scan or blood measurements of PSA levels. Enlarged prostate by MRI and elevated levels of PSA suspects prostate cancer. It can also occur due to infection of prostate gland 'prostatitis'. Biopsy and histopathological examination will reveal proper diagnosis and gives a clear picture as to is it prostatitis or prostate cancer.

Kindly get the biopsy done as suggested by your doctor. Report can be correlated clinically and appropriate treatment can be given accordingly.
