Hi,

The two most common reasons for a rising PSA level are prostate cancer and benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH). Benign means non-cancerous. When PSA level goes up, the physician's obligation to his patient is to make sure patient does not have cancer. To do this the doctor(urologist) takes a biopsy(a small portion) of the prostate gland and sends it to the pathologist.

The pathologist looks at the prostate tissue under microscope for cancer cells. If none are found, the urologist will have the patient return for another scan(MRI) to see if the suspicious area of the prostate has changed and a follow up PSA blood test. I think you have a good urologist who is concerned about you and wants to give you good care and so he/she is asking you to come back sooner rather than later.

Trust your urologist. If she/he requests you back in 3 months, then she/he knows your prostate will have healed by then. The flushed feeling may not happen the second time. Or you might ask if you can be given another numbing medicine.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
