What Causes Elevated PSA Levels?

My husbands PSA was 3.3 in 2014, 4.5 on 4/4/2017 and 4.3 ON 5/3/2017. He has a very strong family history of cancer, hx precancerous polyp removal x2 and quit chewing tobacco a couple of years ago but chews a lot of nicotine gum. What would be our next step? We live in Mt. Vernon Missouri, where would you recommend we go for a cancer consultation. Where could I find a list of the top cancer treatment facilities?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi and welcome to Healthcaremagic. Thank you for your query. I understand your concerns and I will try to help you as much as I can.

Yes, further tests are required since PSA may indicate prostate issues. Cancer is not firt thing to think of but is definitely something that should be ruled out.
These symptoms and PSA findings mostly indicate prostatitis or hypertrophy and rarely it may be sign of STD infection.
He should do prostate ultrasound and check your PSA levels in 1 motnhs to rule out prostate tumor or hypertrophy and further treatment depends on these findings. Biopsy may be taken at time of ultrasound.
In most cases it can be controlled with medications but sometimes, in case of tumor, open surgery is required. Some benign conditions such as benign hypertrophy may be managed endoscopically so you should consult urologist about appropriate options.
I hope I have answered you query. If you have any further questions you can contact us in every time.Kindly regards. Wish you a good health.
