What Causes Elevated PTINR Level?

Hi Doctor, My mother undergone surgery last year for blood clot in intestine, and from then she is using medicine Acitrom. Every month she is having PTINR test which resulting 1.3 to 1.8. suddenly she got fell down due to (giddiness), don t know exact reason (she went unconscious for some time), also she went under medication in 2000 due to blot clot in brain. Then We have taken her to hospital where doctor advised while using Acitrom tablet, she should not have any Vit K food. So we have changed her diet and now PTINR test resulted 6. Request your advise as because of drastic food change PTINR has increased or may be any other reason. And there will be any side effects because of this high PTINR (now she is using Acitrom 2MG)

Hello and welcome to HCM,
PT/INR are the investigations done in patients who are on oral anticoagulants.
Oral anticoagulants inhibit the formation and propagation of blood clots.
However, the dose of anticoagulants has to be monitored so that they do not cause excessive bleeding.
A raised PT/ INR suggests some abnormality in the control of coagulating factors.
With such high levels of PT/INR, you need to consult your treating doctor for correction of the dose of oral anticoagulants.

Thanks and take care
