What Causes Elevated WBC Count While Suffering From Kidney Disease?

my husband is in stage 5 kidney disease and is currently on peritoneal dialysis at home. labs taken 2 days we were ago show an elevated white blood cell count of 10.8 (from a CBC test) I understand this shows an infection and we should watch for fever, redness, soreness, extreme fatigue, etc. and then contact our family doctor for an appointment for an antibiotic prescription. I am very nervous about this situation, and need to know what other things to look for and do we see family now? e-mail: YYYY

Hi,

Yes high level of WBC indicates bacterial infections which are common in dialysis. it's important to have antibiotic cover and have close follow up of WBC levels if they increase do blood cultures to rule out septicaemiatests check urine for infection. Consult renal physician in case it's not resolving.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
