What Causes Elevated WBC Count?

I had gallbladder surgery last year, laparoscopic. 4 days after my hospital discharge I became very ill and my white blood count had gone from 7000 to almost 39000 and I had Sepsis & Bilateral pneumonia. I was admitted to ICU, had to have surgery again because the infection was in my stomach, too. Then 2 days later I had to have another major surgery as my bile duct was leaking into my belly so they had to put a stent in. I almost didn t get through all this and the surgeon who did my gallbladder surgery and the second surgery said this is a very rare thing to happen. I was hospitalized for 27 days and told I was fortunate to be alive. I am a retired nurse and have been reading a lot about the effect some antibiotics have on our bodies. I had a PIC line put in while in ICU because I was getting so many medications in my IV and my IV s kept coming out because I don t have good veins. I am 66 years old. Can you tell me what medications I may have been given during this time? I am allergic to Sulpha drugs and Miacins. I have a son who has been a RN for over 16 years and is in grad school for his masters at the present to be a Nurse Pratitioner. He could probably shed some light on these topics but haven t had a chance to ask him. Thanks.

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi,

Given your medical history, I can assume that you received antibiotics. These would include Metronidazole (for anaerobic bacteria) and Gentamicin (for gram-negative bacteria), and Cefazolin (for gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria).

Since you had intestinal surgery, I think you were not able to have anything by mouth for a while. So you received total parenteral nutrition.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Arnold Zedd,
Pediatrician
