What Causes Elevated Bilirubin Level In Blood?

I have recently had blood tests done, and the direct bilirubin count was double of normal. I then had an ultra sound done of the liver, gall bladder, spleen, kidney. Everything is normal, no obstructions. What then could be the cause of the high count? Could it have been affected by eating certain foods? Should I repeat the test and see whether it comes out different?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As per my clinical experience, the direct bilirubin rise is usually associated with surgical cause of jaundice against the medical causes of viral infections, where the indirect bilirubin raise. The common causes of elevated direct bilirubin are:
- Pancreatic tumors
- Bile duct cancer
- Cirrhosis of the liver
- Side effect of the chemotherapy
- Ill effects of other drugs
- Congenital disorder of enzymes as Gilbert syndrome
- Hemolytic anemia
- Sickle cell disease

As the ultrasound is normal and no obstructions, detailed metabolic profile is needed to be evaluated for exploring rest of the causes.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
