What Causes Elevated Cholesterol And Triglyceride Levels?
I am 66 yrs old, 6-ft tall, 202 lbs.. My total cholesterol is 194 with HDL of 30. My triglycerides are 425. I have no history of diabetes. My mother died at age 92 by heart attack, my father died of Lymphoma. I have no other medical conditions or aches and pains other than a mild case of Hepatitis A in 1980. I eat mostly gluten-free meals and very rarely eat red meat (mostly vegetables, fish or Chicken). I do not exercise on a regular basis but I am not sedimentary either. I work in the yard, hunt and fish. My doctor wants to put me on Staten medication ASAP. Should I be really concerned about these levels? Are there effective alternatives or additional natural remedies that I can try in addition to medication?
High cholesterol and triglyceride levels can be caused 1, if a person use much animal fat or carbohydrates, especially sweets, fastfood, soda 2, if a person is overweight 3, if a person doesn't exercise regularly 4, sometimes in persons who has healthy lifestyle can be seen high cholesterol levels which is hereditary. Their organism produces more cholesterol, than it should be.
The issue whether to prescribe statins or not depends on individual risk profile of a patient, in cas of high risk, statins are recommended, if the risk is not high only lifestyle changes can be done.

My opinion is that you should be started on a statin medication and then re-test after one month. This is due to your age, high lipid levels, and familial history for coronary artery disease. Triglyceride levels can be false positive, if the blood test is carried out within 8-16 hours after the last meal. Also, you should add fruit in your diet, and keep your salt intake low.
I hope I was helpful. Greetings!
