What Causes Elevated Cholesterol Levels And BP Along With Swollen Throat?

I have a question about my husband. He is 64 and he has high cholesterol & high blood pressure. He is being treated for both...well his throat has been red & swollen for the last 3 or 4 weeks. He feels as though something is obstructing his breathing and swallowing, plus his blood pressure has suddenly fallen to 90 over 50. The nurse practitioner has him on antibiotics. Been over a week.... What could it be and what should we do?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

In case of acute food intake and less water intake, dehydration may occur and, then because of dehydration, blood pressure can fall down.

So, he needs to be consulted to otorhinolaryngologist for the examination and if needed, admit him in hospital. Acute pharyngitis can be the cause as per mentioned history. Antibiotic course can be competed.

If congestion present on the examination, decongestant can be prescribed. Lymph node palpation, posterior pharynx examination needs to be done.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Parth Goswami
