What Causes Elevated Heart Rate And Excessive Phlegm?

Hi I am a practical nurse at a health and rehabilitation facility. I am a brand new nurse. Since I ve been at this facility, My resident has been sent out 3 times for sepsis. She starts out with elevated heart rate and then spits up off white thick sputum. She is also on a feeding tube. What could possibly be causing her to become septic?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Is your patient bed ridden? if yes then you need to get good chest physiotherapy for your patient as she might be having recurrent lower respiratory tract infections due to stasis of fluid in lungs. Moreover also check the area of skin around feeding tube does it has any swelling or discharge as that might also be the reason for sepsis. Also check for any bedsores.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
