What Causes Elevated Heart Rate While Using A CPAP Machine?

I have Sleep Apnea which is considered Mild to Moderate (About 18 times an hour), however when I stop breathing, my brain and body act violently. My heart races and I wake in a panic. I have use the CPAP off an on tonight because of episodes from skipped beats to racing heart which has woken me tonight several times. I would wake pulling off the mask. I put the mask on the last time and it seemed to cause the racing heart. Any thoughts.
