There are many things that can cause an elevated heart rate, including a hyperactive thyroid, other type of conditions related to the adrenal glands, primary heart problems such as arrhythmias, decreased oxygen levels, severe infection, dehydration, etc. If there are other symptoms, then sometimes it can be pinpointed to a certain cause. Particular drugs can cause it as well, including over the counter drugs such as decongestants; even caffeine. You don't mention how high the rate was- if it was up above 140 or so, that could indicate a primary heart problem. If this is persisting and especially if symptoms such as shortness of breath or chest pain are associated, best to be seen in emergency. If not so urgent, or if it keeps happening, she should see her doctor who could test for these conditions. Hope this helps.
