What Causes Elevated Hematocrit And RDW Levels?
I have slightly high levels for hematocrit (50.3) and RDW (16.3). The doctor wants me to have the blood test repeated in six months. He seems to think it could be due to fasting before the test and told me to not fast for the follow-up. I am a 58-year-old male. Is this anything to be concerned about . Thank you

High hematocrit and RDW levels may be due to many conditions but if you have not been drinking well before the test, dehydration may cause the levels to be higher than your usual range. Dehydration is the most common cause of high hematocrit so it has to be ruled out first to prevent doing unnecessary extensive checks.
