What Causes Elevated Platelet Count?

Recentley I discovered my platelet count is elevated 904,000. On a redraw it is now 688,000. I have had left side pain and a bloated feeling for 3-4 months now. I have a CT ordered and awaiting results from a blood smear. Through this all I really haven't had any possibilites explained. Could you help me with that?

Hello

Raised platelet count is termed thrombocytosis.Platelets are one of the inflammatory markers. The causes of thrombocytosis in most of the cases are secondary to some inflammatory condition. The inflammation may be due to acute illness or any chronic disease. The primary cause like blood cancer (CML)is uncommon.Complete blood count, peripheral smear along with infection parameter like CRP gives the clue regarding diagnosis.
Left sided pain abdomen can be due to so many causes one of which may be chronic myelogenous leukemia(CML) due to enlargement of spleen
CT scan and smear has been advised already. Wait for the report.
Bone marrow examination may be needed according the report's result.

You can take acid decreasing medication temporarily like pantoprazole/omeprazole.
Regards
