What Causes Elevation In Fasting Blood Sugar Level Despite On Metformin?

Hi Dr. Rynne,I am a newly diagnoised diabetic. when checking my blood sugar, the morning blood after a overnight fast is still reading 142-182, but 90 minutes later when I check after eating it is 140-150 which is supposed to be normal. I am on 500mg of metformin. What is causing the high reading after an overnight fast? Thank you,Kristi

General & Family Physician 's  Response

Hello

Thanks for asking a question at HCM

I will be glad to answer for you

Hi, when are you taking metformin?

If you are taking in the morning, it works all the day and the sugar levels will be high because of there is no action of metformin in the night, if you don't take the tablet.

So, if you are not taking in the night, take one in the night as well, by the supervision of doctor. Thanks.

Hope this helps

Best Regards
Dr Chaithanya
