What Causes Elongation Of Tonsils In The Throat?

My tonsils or the thing in the middle at least is hanging down to my tongue and making me feel like I want to gag all the time. I haven t had any other symptoms that I know of. Should I be worried? It s more just annoying and feels like I need to swallow all the time

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query elongation of tonsils in the throat pointing towards a condition known as tonsillitis . It occurs due to many reasons but untreated upper respiratory tract infection is most common reason for tonsillitis. You should not ignore it as the can get complicated . Some times untreated tonsillitis make tonsils to burst and the tonsillectomy will be the only option left. I would suggest you to do warm saline rinses several times a day. Take ibuprofen ( if not allergic ) or tylenol for pain and swelling . Take bendryl. Consult ENT specialist (ear, nose, throat) for proper examination. Doctor may order blood test or throat swab test to confirm the diagnosis. Doctor may prescribe broad spectrum antibiotics like amoxicilline for at least two weeks.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
