Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
At my last routine physical, my doctor noticed an enlargement of the thyroid and did blood work and an ultrasound of my thyroid. The bloodworm showed showed an under active thyroid, and the scan showed nodules and enlarged lymph nodes. They said the nodules and lymph nodes are not large enough to be concerning, so they want to wait a year and rescan. Is this wise? Or should I get a second opinion? Having nodules and enlarged lymph nodes is a bit concerning even if they aren t quite large yet.
enlarged thyroid or "goiter" is usually caused by iron deficiency.. although, thyroid nodularities and lymphadenopathies might have other causes. if your thyroid function tests are abnormal, a consult with a doctor, preferably an endocrinologist is best for monitoring and medical management. your thyroid nodules, depending on their sizes, character and behavior, needs to be monitored. these are usually not bothersome if they are not obstructing. to know the exact character of the lesion, a tissue diagnosis or a biopsy should be done. a consult with a general surgeon is important on this matter.
hope this helps.
good day!!
