18 years ago I had surgery on my cervical spine for a herniated disc. When I awoke I was in such agony I asked the recovery room nurse if she could induce a coma. My esophagus was on fire. I stayed in the recovery room for 3 hours. Every time I awakened they would shoot morphine into my IV and knock me out. I then spent 5 days in ICU, 4 of which I breathed through an oxygen mask that was a very cold mist, because of esophageal pain. I was told that my left lung collapsed and my esophagus closed during surgery, so they did an emergency intubation. I assumed this was from excess anesthesia, and a normal reaction. But I don t see anything about this happening on Google. Is this a normal reaction? Ever since I ve had episodes of esophageal spasms, but very infrequently.
